Many of the themes, ideas, characters, images, forms, and stylistic features of Melville’s later writings can be traced back to Mardi. As a result, “the true significance of Mardi is that it is the first draft of all his subsequent works” (Brodhead, “Mardi” 39). As an artistic achievement, the book has serious shortcomings, but it nevertheless substantiates Melville’s continued growth and future promise as a writer of imaginative power. Mardi, at least from Melville’s perspective, was his first work of fiction.

This “destruction of the Marquesan way of life,” which Melville’s Typee anticipates, has been called “one of the principal horrors of Pacific history” (Herbert, Marquesan Encounters 19). OMOO (1847) Responding to the popular success of his first book, Melville shaped Omoo as a sequel to Typee. Most consider the result less successful overall 29 STUDENT COMPANION TO HERMAN MELVILLE than the original work, although Melville demonstrates a greater command of form, genre, and characterization. “While the sentimental and sensational style of Typee generates romantic description, the conventions of the nautical reminiscence shape the author’s method in Omoo” (Post-Lauria 53).
