Example text

Thomas merton ( Journals, may 1965) On December 10, 1941, Thomas Merton arrived at the Trappist Abbey of Our Lady of Gethsemani and began his well-documented twenty-seven-year journey toward becoming a monk. Days before his departure for Kentucky, Merton had written a letter dated December 6 to his best friend, Robert Lax. He wrote Lax to say that he was renouncing any future he might have had in New York in favor of discovering a better country and learning its new language. At Gethsemani Merton hoped he could learn to speak in an idiom that more perfectly translated all his experiences into the language of God’s mercy to him.

Etc. Taking only coffee for breakfast makes a lot of sense, because I can read quietly and sip my two mugs of coffee at leisure, and it really suffices for the morning. There is a great need for discipline in meditation. The early morning hours are good, though in the morning meditation (one hour) I am easily distracted by the fire. The presence of Our Lady is important to me. Elusive but I think a reality in this hermitage. Her influence is a demand of love, and no amount of talking will explain it.

And yet I am such a fool that I can consent to imagine that in some other situation I would quickly advance to a high degree of prayer. If I went anywhere else, I would almost certainly be much worse off than here. And, anyway, I did not come to Gethsemani for myself but for God. God is my order and my cell. He is my religious life and my rule. He has disposed everything in my life in order to draw me inward, where I can see Him and rest in Him. He has put me in this place because He wants me in this place, and if He ever wants to put me anywhere else, He will do so in a way that will leave no doubt as to who is doing it.
